Our national vehicle modification regulations are currently been renewe d. One of the loop holes that I did spot was the possibility of having an engine up to 100 hp in a 2CV. I think the idea is pretty good. A motorcycle engine in a car is however prohibited.

It’s just so satisfying . I think if you drove it gently, and didn’t trash your brakes or your gearbox, that would be a really fun car to drive around in.

I wonder what he exactly means by “stock parts”. For instance, the Ami 8 chassis was not quite like a 2CV’s, but reinforced; late 2CVs and Dyane 6s had disc brakes (and the Dyane 6 even had an anti-roll bar at the front).

I mean, even by using stock parts from the Citroën flat-twin family of cars you can end up with something that is just a littl e bit better than a showroom-stock 2CV. Admittedly, by the time production had finished it already had quite a few of those improvements.

In his misspent adulthood, a late mate of mine who was very much into old Citroëns – and more specifically into 2CVs and derivatives – had for a while a 2CV with a GS engine (flat-four, 1220 cc) and the C-Matic semiautomatic gearbox. It was indeed a bit of a rocket. I think the idea behind the C-Matic was that it allowed fitment of the GS mill without major surgery, but I may be wrong. (Citroën themselves had offered a smaller , 1-litre version of the GS engine in the Ami 8, so the idea was not as daft as it sounds).

Back in the 90s one of the staffers o f Car magazine (Steve Cropley) had his Deuche modified by turbocharger specialist TurboTechnics, who replaced the Solex with a Weber carb and yes, added a turbocharger. It didn’t end terribly well (one fine day it caught fire). Version 2 had an SU carburettor, and no fires were reported, I think.

Look it up, it’s been scanned to death.

There’s a Top Gear Special called “Cars of the People,” hosted by James May, that is outstanding. Currently in my watching -- Season 2, Episode 2 -- he is waxing enthusiastically about the CV2.

Finland. Our modification laws are strict compared to the US or Sweden but quite relaxed compared to the rest of the Europe.

I think I saw the one about the Fiat 500, back in the day. May is excellent. He writes amazingly well, too.

Chris Harris shot s everal nice videos about his 2CV ( quite an oldie ! ). Y o u c a n f i nd them o n Y o u T u b e .

What about tractors? Is there tractor pulling with ridiculous 3,000 hp modified tractors?

I think the Fiat bit was aimed more at the Fiat 124 and a mention of the 500 and how the Lada version of the 124 had sold gazillions of copies and that the 124/Lada were the most copies made of any car.

Fabulous show, though. I always liked James May and strongly disliked the other two. He’s in his element on this show and first quality production, as you’d expect from Top Gear.

Maybe not 3000 hp ( ~2500 hp currently was an estimate by some enthusiasts) but it’s still somewhat popular hobby in certain rural areas of Finland . But most run fairly regular tractors and only few remain heavily modified. And nearly all use diesel engines.

During early 200 0's one Finnish diesel engine manufacturer invested quite a lot money in their factory teams tractor pulling efforts. I did learn from their former factory manager that their engine could withstand 18 bar of boost pressure! This ridiculous amount of boost was achieved using three turbochargers . The cylinder head just w ouldn’t stay attached to the block with higher boost . They did try of course...

The current factory sponsored team gets ~2100 hp with 7 bar of boost with a single turbocharger (only one is allowed in super stock class). Their engine is 8.2l straight six but it goes up to 6800 rpm. This is ove r double what the production version does.

One of my university studying mates has actually been involved in building pulling trucks/ tractors. Here’s a nutty looking Scania truck that’s nearly finished . My friend has done the turbocharger selection and the engine mapping for the this one.

The cylinder head just wouldn’t stay attached to the block with higher boost.

Sometimes the head will stay attached and the entire top half of the block will separate along with the cylinder head.

The highly modified pulling tractors fascinate me as I wonder at how much money it must cost to develop one of those engines.

I was told many ways how the engines broke but cannot remember all of them. T hat maximum pressure was a value that was worth remembering though. Blowing many e ngines is an expensive way to learn but the factory support must have provided nice amount of spares.

When the germans and French meet, things tend to start blowing up.

Someone replaced those two French horses with a bunch of big Bavarian ones.

The ultimate expression of driving a slow car fast.

Under 9-seconds to 100kph... may be the fastest 2CV in HISTORY!

But, seriously, that is a fun video.

Imagine an HP2S DOHC hex-head in there... or in the interest of being a car.. maybe an R1250RT... I think maybe some of those big touring rigs had a reverse gear, but I am not sure about that.

I also wonder what a 2CV speedster would look like. Roof cut off, bodywork enclosed, but open-cockpit with just one or two seats... some wheels that might actually be six whole inches wide...

I can't say why that video so captivated me, but certainly, the exhaust note helped. I think also the fact that or at least the idea that that BMW engine would bolt in there fairly readily.

the sound, and just the concept of a 2CV dicing it up on the track, is just great, and hilarious.

A car that was made to drive across plowed fields with farm fresh eggs intact, and be the peasantry’s replacement to a 2-horse cart.

a great unlikely underdog story.
